If you are using tap water then, it may have high dose of Chlorine and/or chloramin.
you can remove chlorine either by keeping the water for 4-5 days in a separate tank or by mixing chemicals available in the market to nutralise it.
for chloramin, you need to use avaialble chemicals.
in most cases, your native fishes will survive in you tank witout any additional chemicals. However, if you are planning to keep species from different places then you may have to check the parameters for KH, PH, DH.
if you want to keep plants then you may have to add plant supplements too.
Let us know your specific requirement ( ex fish plant category)
All the best.

I've considered buying fish.
But because I am a newbie to this, I have no idea what fish will be good for a newbie like me to start with.
Hope you can help with some advice.
Thanks
